Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results. Online with Dr. Beverly Schulz

Activities for Lesson 1

In each lesson I'll have a set of activities for you to do to expand your knowledge and dig a little deeper into the topics we've been discussing.

Some topics may apply more to you than others. Some information you may not yet be ready for. Take what you can and work with that! You may want to use a binder or notebook to keep printouts from this class. At the end of class, I'll provide a list of all the Web sites we visited, but you may want to print some of the Activity pages and keep those in your Notebook as well.

1 - What are the Laws for Your State? ☼

If you don’t know already, check them here. The Home School Legal Defense Association maintains a database of each state’s legal requirements, including things like the compulsory age for chidren to be in school. Print out your findings and add them to your class notebook. These will be the basis for many decisions you make.

2 - Contact your State Department of Education

In Appendix D of our text, you'll find listings for each state's Department of Education. Visit the Web site for your state and see if there's any additional information listed there that would be important to home schoolers. You may have to search that site for "home school" or "homeschool," as they do not always make that information available from their home page! Print out anything that is pertinent and add it to your class notebook.

3 - Reading Assignment

Let's get acquainted with our text The Everything Homeschooling Book by Sherri Linsenbach.

There are a number of books written on home schooling and you may find others you enjoy as well. This text is a good, light-hearted introduction to the subject. It covers the basics thoroughly without overwhelming you with information. It covers both religion-based home schooling as well as secular options and gives you a wealth of information that well help you make the right decisions for your family.

Please read the following chapters:

Chapter 1 - Homeschool Orientation

Chapter 3 - Getting Started

Chapter 4 - Types of Homeschooling

As your reading, feel free to make notes on the pages (it's okay!), highlight areas of interest and mark passages that you may have questions about. Post any questions to the Discussion Board.

Discussion Board for Home School with Success!

It's not my intent to repeat the textbook in our lessons, but I will suggest some activities that build from there.

4 - Vocabulary Quiz

After you've completed the reading assignment, please take this quiz to review some of the terms introduced in the reading.
